Removing Rust Stains From Your Sink

Stubborn rust stains aren’t necessarily the result of rust problems in your home’s plumbing or even in the water authority’s pipelines. Water with a high iron content can stain your porcelain sink over time. If you live in an area with lots of underground iron deposits, that iron is probably leaching into the groundwater and could potentially lead to these irritating stains. Here are a few methods to try and remove stains from your sinks.

  1. For light stains, try the rough side of a two-sided sponge.
  2. There are a few products designed for porcelain that use a volcanic rock called “pumice”. With a bit of effort, rust stains can be removed.
  3. Lemon juice and salt might do the trick without having to leave the comfort of your home. Create a paste from lemon juice and salt. Apply it and wait for several hours before scrubbing away.
  4. Although not nearly as environmentally friendly as the techniques above, there are household chemical cleaners available that might do the trick. Look for porcelain safe cleaners that contain hydrochloric acid.

If all else fails and you can’t live with the stain, perhaps it’s time to replace that aging sink. For a quote on sink replacement, give us a call at [ps-phone-group] or click here to send us a message and we’ll get a plumbing professional out to your home to offer you some solutions.
